Remove Vista (Dual)-Boot Loader

This is , in a way, the exact opposite of my previous article.

You see , there are cases , that you may want to remove the Vista Boot Loader from a dual boot system . Removing dual-boot is relatively easy if everything is OK with your system , because you can use Vista Boot Pro . But what if the Boot Loader is corrupted and you cannot Logon in neither WinXP or Vista? Is there a way to remove the Vista Boot Loader?

Some of you , may assume that you can simply boot with a Windows 98 Boot Floppy Disk and just type "fdisk /mbr". Wrong!!! This will NOT remove the Vista Bootloader!!

The correct method is as follows :

A. REMOVE VISTA DUAL-BOOT (IN ORDER TO BOOT ONLY IN WINDOWS XP)

1. Configure your BIOS to boot from DVD-ROM First
2. Inster your WINDOWS XP cd-rom
3. Select "Repair using Recovery Console" option
4. Logon into WinXP installation and type the admin password when prompted.
5. Type fixmbr and press enter
6. Type fixboot and press enter.
7. Type exit

Restart your machine and , presto, you will logon to your trusty old Windows XP installation!

B. REMOVE VISTA DUAL-BOOT (IN ORDER TO BOOT ONLY IN WIN. VISTA)

1. Configure your BIOS to boot from DVD-ROM First
2. Inster your WINDOWS VISTA dvd-rom
3. Press Next in the Language Settings.
4. Select Repair installation
5. The installer will detect the corrupted Boot loader and will offer to repair it. Select OK
6. The repair will remove the dual-boot and will default to load Vista automatically.

Restart your machine and , presto, you will logon to your brand new Windows Vista installation!
